The idea behind a drug detox is to get all of the accumulated drugs out of your body. The reason we do this is we want to take charge of our lives again and start to live in recovery rather than addiction.

Now for the person who is on a boatload of drugs the most practical way is in fact drug detox. There are other alternatives to this like some sort of drug detox maintenance. There also is cold turkey. There however is the option of long term therapy this may work for some individuals but you still have to get the drugs out of your system. It basically comes down to a personal decision.

All drugs do not depend upon medical detox; for instance, a person who is just smoking weed will not require a medical detox but drugs like heroin and other opiates, plus alcohol, and sedatives, can require a medical detox. I know alcohol withdrawal can be fatal if severe enough so you will want to take ever precaution when detoxing from alcohol and sedatives also carry the same risk.

If you are addicted to opiates either pills like hydrocodone or heroin then you will more than likely require a medical detox. This will be done by people specifically trained it this area. They will more than likely start you out with subutex and taper you to suboxone this entire process will take approximately 4 or 5 days. One needs to keep in mind there will be some discomfort from opiate withdrawal until the medication takes effect then you should be good to go.

One other option is Rapid Drug Detox

This is great for the addict who is addicted to pain medications or heroin who wants to stop using opiates. This type of treatment is known as ultra rapid detox. This is a procedure where they use anesthesia to knock you out and then they rapidly remove all the opiates from your body. Most people experience little or no withdrawal whatsoever when they come too. I am not sure this is for everyone I think one would have to be really serious about staying clean once it is over with because it is very expensive thousands of dollars and as of yet no insurance will cover it.
