How to help an alcoholic

It’s hard to help an alcoholic overcome alcoholism. It’s a tough time for anyone involved and will try the patience of even the most patient people. The best thing for you to remember is that yelling and constantly criticizing the person is not going to do you or the person recovering any good. This will only escalate problems and make things worse than they already are if you use this strategy on how to help an alcoholic.

One really good thing to do for someone who is trying to quit drinking is to eliminate the chance that they may take a drink. Remove all alcoholic beverages from the home entirely. Do not lock it up or hide it. Completely remove it from the home and don’t allow anything else alcoholic to be brought into the home for any reason, even special occasions. I know some people are not going to like this idea of how to help an alcoholic at all but it is an option.

Do not drink around the person or talk about drinking alcohol around the person. This will only fuel their want for it more. If you are doing something that they cannot do, then it may cause feelings of confusion or resentment towards you or anyone else in the house that may drink.

Another way how to  help an alcoholic is find something else to do to pass the time. Everyone has hobbies. If the person enjoys fishing, then pack a cooler with soda and take them on a fishing trip. No matter what their hobby is, if you can get them engrossed in their hobby, then it will help take their mind off things.

It’s going to be a hard time for anyone involved. If everyone sticks together and moves towards the common goal then it will make things easier for the person recovering from alcohol. Be there for them as a constant support person, even if it means staying up late at night or being willing to receive phone calls at all hours to help keep them from temptation.

I think the best idea how to help an alcoholic would be if you can get them to go take them to an AA meeting there they will meet others just like their selves who are struggling with alcoholism. If they are in bad shape and have been drinking say for years they will need to be medically detoxed from alcohol. To quit cold turkey is dangerous the person could have seizures and in some cases even die from alcohol withdrawal.

Alcohol withdrawal is worse than a heroine withdrawal. So my advice if this is the case to take them to rehab or the hospital there they will be able to help the alcoholic to overcome their alcoholism. The important thing is for them to get help but then again they will have to be will because you can not graft a new idea on a closed mind!
