Heroin Detox Options

by admin on January 30, 2010

If you want to detox from heroin then you have a couple of options.

First option is cold turkey on your couch.  This is not fun as anyone who has used heroin can already testify to.  Chances are not even that great that you will stay clean for long if you try to go this route.  There is not much you can do to help yourself if you choose to detox at home from heroin.  At best you can take some over the counter medications to try and ease the withdrawal symptoms.  For the most part they will not help much though.  Not trying to be a pessimistic here; those are just the facts.

Another option you might try is to go to rehab.  This is the typical inpatient program where they will give you some medications and possibly treat your heroin withdrawal with some form of synthetic opiate.  If this is the case then they can manage your symptoms and your heroin detox will go much smoother.  If you can afford to go this route or can get funded in some way then this is probably the best choice for almost any drug addict.  If you have Medicaid then you can probably find a drug rehab like I just described that will take you in.  If not, you will need private insurance or a wad of cash.  In any event it is probably worth it if you are serious about changing your life.

Now some people will tell you that you need to drink tons of fluids and sweat a lot and take some diuretics in order to flush your system, but this is probably not the case.  Common sense prevails.  Treat your body right.

One final option is ultra rapid detox heroin detox.  This is like a surgical procedure almost where they put you under and flush your body.  It is expensive, even more so than drug rehab, and it is not covered by insurance.  Also, there is some risk of death with this route so you might want to reconsider going to rehab instead.

Or, you could tough it out on the couch with a bottle of Motrin and an old bag of Doritos Cool Ranch.

Rehab is looking better all the time……
